The Master Cleanse is a detoxifying diet, so you are literally removing poisons from your body. It is the poisons in your body that make you feel tired, unhappy and lethargic. Once these poisons are removed you will feel happier and healthier, you should also notice an increase in your energy levels.
Unfortunately, doing a detox will cause symptoms that aren't pleasant and you may be tempted to stop the Master Cleanse before your detox is complete. Understanding the symptoms of detoxification will help you get through the full 10 days.
I have done the master Cleanse several times and know that a symptom I am feeling today could well be gone tomorrow.
Here are the symptoms you may experience during your detoxification.
Cravings.
You are about to go 10 days without the food and drinks you enjoy most. The likelihood is you are going to suffer from cravings. Most of these are not hunger, although you are likely to mistake them for hunger. If you feel hungry, simply drink some more lemonade, it will make your hunger pains disappear. Your craving are probably for sugar or caffeine, or you might have a craving for greasy foods such as burgers or pizza. These cravings will pass.
Lethargic and loss of energy
During detoxification your body is working hard to remove all the toxins from your body. You may feel tired and need some extra rest during your detox period. Usually this lasts for short spells during the 10 days and will be repaid with new found energy on completion of the program.
Impatient and irritable
You're not getting your favourite foods, you feel tired, sometimes sick, maybe headaches and joint pains. It is likely that you may become a little irritable and impatient throughout your detox. Make sure you are aware of this and ensure you don't take out your frustration on the people around you. You will need to fight the urge of temptation to eat something you shouldn't if you suffer from having to eat 'comfort foods' when you are feeling this way.
Aches, pains, nausea and sometimes vomiting.
Luckily, only a few experience these more severe symptoms, the good news is that if you are going to experience these symptoms it will be in the first few days, and will be short lived. These symptoms are made worse if you have a lot of toxins in your body or you suffer from a severe caffeine addiction as you may also get bad headaches from the caffeine withdrawal.
Hot Bum (from bowel movements)
Yes… you are likely to get a sore bum as you pass the toxins. I thought this was worth a mention. You might like to prepare with some baby wipes to make yourself more comfortable throughout the process. The good news is that you know the toxins are disappearing from your body if this is happening to you!
Diarrhea
You will almost certainly experience diarrhea on a detox program. Once again, this is your body assisting in the removal of toxins.
